A FORMER Australian jockey jailed in China for drug smuggling has escaped a death sentence and his family still holds hope he could one day return to Australia.

A Chinese court has handed a “suspended death sentence” to Anthony John Bannister, 43, who was arrested and charged for attempting to smuggle 3kg of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as “ice”, from China to Australia in March last year.

The verdict means that if Bannister, a jockey in South Australia, commits no crimes in prison over the next two years, his death sentence can be commuted to life imprisonment.
