Marquez fends off rookie to win in Germany


Marc Marquez fends off Jonas Folger to win the German MotoGP.

IT wasn’t the romp to an eighth-straight Sachsenring victory many expected for Marc Marquez.

The reigning world champion did indeed keep his remarkable record of success in the German Grand Prix, dating back to 2010, intact, but he wasn’t the star of the race.

That honour – and the cheers of the partisan crowd – went to Jonas Folger.

The German rookie pushed Marquez the whole way, even rushing into the lead in the early laps. The black No.94 Yamaha was glued to the back of the No.93 Honda as the laps waned, giving even Marquez cause for doubt.

“I was pushing, pushing, pushing the whole race,” Marquez beamed. “The last five laps I tried to increase a little bit, it was enough to open a small gap.”
