NT govt renews support for croc hunting

The Northern Territory government has again backed calls for regulated trophy hunting of crocodiles in collaboration with indigenous groups.

Both the NT government and the opposition remain in favour of safari hunting, Chief Minister Michael Gunner said on Thursday.

However Mr Gunner noted that no federal government, Liberal or Labor, had been supportive of the idea in recent years.

“If the Australian government gave us a flag to look at this we would happy to do the research and work around what would be the right model,” Mr Gunner said.

The NT government estimates there are more than 100 000 crocodiles in the wild with their numbers exploding from near extinction after becoming protected in 1971.

There have been have been numerous calls for culling to be allowed ever since due to threats to human safety and livestock.
