Parliament’s ‘appalling’ new fence


A NEW security fence around Parliament House in Canberra is taking shape, with large and imposing panels installed on the laws surrounding the building today.

It marks another step forward in the controversial 2.6 metre high perimeter barrier, part of the iconic building’s $126 million security upgrade.

Work took a major step forward on Tuesday, with cranes lifting the panels with thin vertical bars onto the sloping lawn ramps.

Senators signed off on the measures last December on the same day two activists abseiled from the Parliament House roof to unfurl a banner protesting the detention of asylum seekers on Manus Island and Nauru.

Concern about the fences following their announcement late last year was met with assurances that they would not be visually intrusive.

But there’s no denying they add a very new aesthetic to one of Australia’s most recognisable buildings.
