Senior Dems urge Franken to quit


US Senator Al Franken’s support among his fellow Democrats is cratering as a host of female Democratic senators overnight called upon him to resign.

Senators Kirsten Gillibrand, Patty Murray, Claire McCaskill, Mazie Hirono, Kamala Harris, and Maggie Hassan, all initially called on Mr Franken to step down.

Now, as many as 28 Democrats have called on Mr Franken to resign.

It comes as Mr Franken’s office announced he would make a statement on Thursday, although it was unclear what the statement would be.

The calls to resign came as another woman accused Mr Franken of sexual misconduct in an account to Politico.

“I believe it would be better for our country if he sent a clear message that any kind of mistreatment of women in our society isn’t acceptable by stepping aside to let someone else serve,” Mrs Gillibrand said.
