A TOURIST has been winched to safety after injuring her leg in a fall at the base of Jim Jim Falls.

The 70-year-old woman was airlifted to Royal Darwin Hospital by CareFlight in a stable condition.

She was injured on Wednesday afternoon at the remote location in Kakadu, which is typically accessed via a tough 4WD track.

The CareFlight TopEnd rescue helicopter was sent out shortly after 3.30pm.

A doctor and nurse were winched down to treat the woman just over an hour later.

The woman and her husband were taken aboard the helicopter and transported to RDH where they arrived about 6.30pm.
