Trump ‘rethinks’ ambassador to Australia

THE Trump administration plans to nominate Admiral Harry Harris, the proposed next US ambassador to Australia, to instead fill the long-vacant post of ambassador to South Korea instead, a senior US official said.

Another source with knowledge of the situation said US President Donald Trump’s nominee to be secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, had asked Admiral Harris to take the post in Seoul, which has been vacant since Mr Trump took office in January last year.

Both sources spoke on condition of anonymity.

There was no immediate comment from the White House.

In February, President Donald Trump named US Pacific Commander Admiral Harry Harris as his pick to serve as the American ambassador to Australia.

It was an appointment welcomed by Australia.

“He’s well known to us. He’s a highly decorated naval commander and we look forward to his Senate confirmation proceeding,” Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said at the time.
