Mark McGowan compares Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook ban to North Korean dictatorship

WA Premier Mark McGowan has likened Facebook’s blocking of Australian news to the behaviour of a dictator.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, McGowan had strong words for Mark Zuckerberg and his Facebook empire.

His comments follow the platform’s move to ban Australian news outlets, and even some government pages, from publishing content.

The ban was in response to Australia’s proposed media bargaining code that would force platforms like Facebook to negotiate with media companies to pay for news content.

The premier accused Facebook of behaving like a “North Korean dictator” and called for the US government to get involved.

He said the move was “highly inappropriate and dangerous”.

“What they are doing is wrong,” he said.
