HRH Prince Philip was a friend to Queensland, visiting the Sunshine State on 12 occasions – with his first visit coming in 1954. Travelling much of our vast state over the years, the Duke of Edinburgh was present at key events in Queensland’s history including the 1982 Commonwealth Games and Expo ’88. When the Gateway Bridge was officially opened by the Duke of Edinburgh on 14 May 1986, it had been carrying cars for four months. Displaying his trademark sense of humour, Prince Philip declared it “more open than usual”. His Royal Highness will be remembered fondly by Queenslanders for his lifetime of service. 📸 Queensland State Archives
