Singapore, Vietnam on alert; German dip

Singapore and Vietnam have tightened safety measures after a coronavirus variant first detected in India was recorded amid a resurgence in infection in both countries while in Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel has expressed cautious optimism about the end of the pandemic.

The Vietnamese government said in a statement on Wednesday that it would extend the 14-day quarantine period for all international travellers, giving no further details about how long the measure would be in place.

Authorities in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi ordered the closure of all schools to stem the spread of new infections.
