Senior Nationals are threatening to derail Scott Morrison's 2050 net zero emissions plan after it was discussed for the first time at a Cabinet meeting yesterday. 

They've signalled any endorsement of the proposal will be delayed – unless guarantees are made that climate measures will not damage jobs or regional economies.

They're also concerned a more ambitious medium-term target and a net zero pledge could trigger voter backlash in key states. 

A Nationals partyroom meeting will determine whether the Coalition will fracture or unite over the plan on Sunday. 

But Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says Australia cant move away from the global climate push. 

Australia will need a surge in renewable power and a shift to electric cars to meet the United Nations' 2030 goal.

The International Energy Agency has warned the Government must dramatically boost its efforts – or risk being stranded by its international trading partners.

It's increasing pressure on the Prime Minister as he considers whether to attend the Glasgow summit at the end of the month.
