Treasurer advises Tim Smith to consider advice about stepping down

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has urged Liberal MP Tim Smith to take on the advice of his party leader Matthew Guy, who is encouraging him to step down. 

His comments came in an interview with Sky News Australia on Thursday morning. 

It comes after former Prime Minister Tony Abbott has urged preselectors in Mr Smith's electorate of Kew not to end his political career.

Mr Abbott said he believes Mr Smith is the party's best Victorian talent and has most effectively attacked the Andrews government during the course of the COVID pandemic. 

Mr Smith on Wednesday spoke publicly for the first time since the incident, refusing to stand down.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening during which he drove while almost three times over the legal alcohol limit, clipped another car, and smashed into a home in Hawthorn – coming within just metres from a child's bedroom.
