Morrison faces France spat after return from Glasgow

After a week away, the prime minister has returned as his government tries to patch up its relationship with France.

It follows a stinging speech from the French ambassador on Wednesday as he accused the government of betrayal and deceit, claiming Australia stabbed France in the back.

The G20 in Rome and COP26 Climate Change Conference in Glasgow have been overshadowed with the souring of Australia's relationship with France despite the fact that Prime Minister Scott Morrison phoned President Emmanuel Macron before his departure.

Foreign Minister Marise Payne, in an exclusive interview with Sky News Australia, has made the point that there may have been far more on the table when it came to AUKUS, as it was about the acquisition of technology and how this may benefit Australia's position in the Indo-Pacific.
