British workers to fill Australian skill gap

The federal government will allow more British expats to work on post-pandemic holiday visas to address critical labour shortages.

Federal Trade and Tourism Minister Dan Tehan is working to finalize a new free-trade agreement with his UK counterpart within days.

The currently working holiday visa age limit will be extended to 35 years and will last for up to three years.

The international border is set to open on November 1 in New South Wales – first to Australians and their families, then international students, working holiday makers and the agricultural workforce.

Negotiations are continuing, however, Mr Tehan is confident a deal will be made.

The FTA is not expected to come into effect until July 1 next year.
