Regional communities are ‘passionate about the environment’: Darren Chester

Nationals MP Darren Chester says people in regional communities are “passionate about the environment”.

The backbencher said regional Australia is focused on “a whole range of packages, not just emissions reduction” – as the Nationals party continues to debate their position on adopting a net zero emissions target.

A conclusion is yet to be reached after two days of party room meetings between the junior Coalition partner, with leader Barnaby Joyce saying the party will not be “forced into a corner”.

The Nationals are looking for several things “as a party room”, according to Mr Chester.

This includes job security, and an energy guarantee – as “reliable, affordable energy is so critically important for our nation’s future”.

“And ensuring that we’re also part of the solution around practical environmental management,” he added.
