‘We won’t be told’: Nationals will not be ‘forced into a corner’ on net-zero

Deputy PM and Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce has indicated his party will not be rushed into making a decision on net-zero before the prime minister leaves for the Glasgow climate conference.

"Sometimes, if you start giving time constraints, you'll get one answer if people are not completely comfortable – and I don't think that's the answer people want," Mr Joyce told a media conference on Monday.

"In anything in life, if someone believes they're being forced into a corner, you know what they're going to do – they're going to say no."

Amid suggestions, the Nationals should endeavour to reach an agreement before the PM departs for COP26, Mr Joyce said, "we won't be told" what to do.

"We won't be told anything – we're our own party and what other people choose to do is up to them.

"We choose to go into a coalition ... but we're not chained to a coalition."
