PM agrees to regional climate check-ups

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has agreed to a climate change safeguard – to review the economic impact the proposed 2050 net zero target will have on regional and rural communities. 

Cabinet adopted the agreement on Monday night.

The first assessment will be delivered in 2023 – after five years of investigations.

The Prime Minister says the review would allow for transparency and accountability.

It will not be a review trigger for the government's emissions-reduction commitments. 

The Nationals have also secured another seat in federal Cabinet, in exchange for the party's support of the Prime Minister's net zero target.
