Middle class voters ‘let down’ by PM’s submarine spat with Macron

Focus groups says voters in middle class, metropolitan seats feel “let down” by Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s spat with French President Emmanuel Macron and see the submarine snub as the latest in a suite of issues that “speak to integrity”. It follows accusation made by Mr Macron that he was lied to after the Commonwealth scrapped its $90 billion deal with Naval Group in favour of US nuclear-powered submarines. “There’s certainly parts of the country – voter cohorts – that are really responding to the Australian national interest argument, that’s why we’ve changed it and the stuff that’s happened over the last couple of days with the sledging of Australia will play for that voter cohort,” Redbridge Group director Simon Welsh told Sky News Australia. “But again, this central flank of the Liberals, these metropolitan, middle class seats, what we’re seeing even before the weekend’s events, was a view of how our actions will impact globally, in terms of our reputation. “People are really seeing this as a suite of issues that speak to integrity, so I’d expect that we’ll be hearing a lot about integrity, and climate change, in those metropolitan, middle class, liberal-held seats going into the next election. “In these middle class, metropolitan seats, there is a special pointedness to the discussion because a lot of these voters are lifelong liberal voters and they feel let down, they feel let down by the behaviour of this government but the form of conservatism that this government has been bringing.”
