Tony Abbott throws support behind Liberal MP Tim Smith

Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott has thrown his support behind Victorian MP Tim Smith as he tries to save his political career – after a drunken car crash. Mr Smith fronted the media outside parliament labelling the incident as a 'error of judgement'. He repeatedly refused to answer questions on whether he was asked to resign by Liberal Leader Matthew Guy . Mr Guy says he 'made it clear' Mr Smith should not nominate at the next election and for the seat of Kew. Despite his refusal to stand down – a Liberal Party committee is expanding its search for candidates to replace him. But Mr Abbott is warning pre-selectors not to end the public life of the Liberal party's 'best Victorian talents'.
