‘Australians are thoroughly fed up’: Turnbull slammed for PM lying jab

Finance Minister Simon Birmingham has slammed Malcolm Turnbull’s intervention over the French submarine row, declaring Australians are “thoroughly fed up” with former prime ministers looking for the limelight. Relations between Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Mr Turnbull hit a new low over the week after the former Liberal Party leader saying his successor has always had a “reputation for telling lies”. Speaking to Sky News Australia, Minister Birmingham threw his support behind the prime minister, and says the decision to scrap the submarine deal in favour of nuclear-powered vessels will secure Australia’s future. “I think Australians are a little thoroughly fed up with former prime ministers and their desires to intervene,” he said. “What matters around decisions that were made about submarines was that Scott Morrison and our government were taking decisions in the long-term interest of Australia. “These were decisions not about how people’s feelings were going to be hurt this day, this month or this year, they were decisions about how Australia was best going to be protected and our national securities secured for decades to come. “That was at the fundamental heart of those decisions, it’s why they were the right ones to take … that’s going to help secure the future of our nation.”
