Conscience votes promote ‘diversity of opinion’ in politics

Herald Sun journalist Caleb Bond says it is a “good thing” to see politicians exercising their conscience vote and diverting from their party’s position when they think it’s wrong because it promotes “diversity of opinion” in politics.  

The Australian is reporting Scott Morrison will need Labor’s support to set up his $1 billion low-emissions technology fund after Liberal Senator Gerard Rennick and Nationals Senator Matt Canavan vowed to vote against it. 

"I have to say that I do enjoy politicians who have conviction," Mr Bond said.  

“Politicians who are willing to stray from their party’s point of view I think are often chided by people within their own parties. 

“But they are the people who ultimately, if they think that their government or their party is going down the wrong line, they've got the gumption and the guts to get up and say they think it’s wrong."
