Ag visas will ‘complement and supplement’ other schemes: Littleproud

Agriculture Minister David Littleproud says he's not worried the Ag visa will undermine key elements of the Pacific Step-up such as the Seasonal Worker Programme and Pacific Labour Scheme.

"This complements and supplements the Pacific scheme," he told Sky News Australia. 

"But in fact the Ag visa goes to skilled and semi-skilled workers, much of which the Pacific Island countries don't have."

Mr Littleproud said there is expected to be a shortfall just in horticulture of 30,000 workers by February.

"So the reality is, just in hort we're behind, then you put over the meat sector and every other part of agriculture - there is more work to go around than you can poke a stick at," he said.

"And Australians aren't interested in taking this work up."
