‘Easiest thing to do’: Falinski pressures PM to improve climate targets

Liberal MP Jason Falinski says Australia is in a “really good position” to increase emissions reductions targets as the Morrison government faces increasing pressure to do more to tackle climate change. 

Australia is among a handful of countries being told to set a more ambitious 2030 emissions reduction target under a draft decision paper released at the COP26 climate summit.

And the Member for Mackellar says it would be the “easiest thing in the world” to do given the nation’s record in meeting, and beating, the Paris targets. 

“It is the easiest thing in the world, for us, to improve our targets for 2030 because we’re already above our targets that we set in Paris,” he told Sky News Australia. 

“There’s probably even more that we can do between now and 2030 but they’re questions that need to be thrashed out over the next three to six months. 

“But, as I say, as a nation, we’re in a really good position because we’re able to increase our targets without having a material impact on our economy.”
