Liberal MP John Alexander will retire from politics at the next election, bring to a close more than a decade in federal politics.

He's held the Sydney seat of Bennelong since 2010 when he defeated Labor's Maxine McKew, who toppled former Prime Minister John Howard three years earlier.

In a letter to constituents, Mr Alexander said: "Alongside representing Australia in tennis, representing our community here in Bennelong has been one of the greatest honours of my life.

"Winning back Bennelong wasn't easy. But we got there through hard work and perseverance."

The Coalition holds the seat on a margin of 6.9 per cent.
