New hires surge as lockdowns end

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says the Coalition is confident of a strong economic rebound – as lockdowns lift across Australia's east coast.

Unpublished payroll data from the Australian Taxation Offices indicate the number of new hires in Australia increased by more than 13 per cent as lockdowns ended.

The number of workers hired by business in New South Wales increased by 25 per cent in the fortnight after lockdown ended – one of the biggest gains since the series began last year.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has told Sky News Australia it's good news for Australians, ahead of Christmas.
