Peter Dutton’s lingering leadership ambition

Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says there are two scenarios being discussed in the background amid Defence Minister Peter Dutton revealing he still has prime ministerial ambitions should Scott Morrison eventually retire.

Mr Dutton gave an interview to the Weekend Australian to mark 20 years in parliament.

"There are two scenarios being talked about in the background here – one is where the government loses the election after which there would be a Peter Dutton versus Josh Frydenberg leadership tussle," Mr Clennell said.

"With a close election expected, this would mean government could be won back within three years.

"The other scenario often talked about would be a situation where Scott Morrison wins the election and retires sometime during the next term – and then Dutton and Frydenberg duke it out."
