‘Devil’s in the detail’ of Morrison government’s religious freedoms bill

The West Australian’s Ben O’Shea says the “devil's in the detail” of the Morrison government's religious freedoms bill which will be introduced to parliament next week.  

The Australian is reporting the bill will protect Australians who express reasonable and genuinely held faith-based views which might offend others from prosecution by anti-discrimination tribunals.  

“What we’re seeing here is a compromised bill compared to the original iteration," Mr O’Shea told Sky News host Jenna Clarke.  

“I think for me the important thing was the removal of the conscientious objection clauses.  

“So a baker could have refused to bake a cake for a same sex couple – that's all gone now, it’s going to fall under the umbrella of the existing religious discrimination act. 

“There’ll be some people who aren’t happy with it but I think a lot of religious groups are taking a pretty pragmatic approach to it.

"Maybe it doesn’t go as far as they would like but it does offer more protections than they currently have.”
