Sydney radio broadcaster Ben Fordham has doubled down on claims Malcolm Turnbull intervened in editorial affairs of media outlets, labelling the former prime minister’s repeated denials as “pretty hollow”.

The 2GB breakfast radio host revealed on Monday Mr Turnbull has pressured Nine not to run a story in relation to alleged remarks made about Kevin Rudd’s wife, Therese Rein, by telling a young journalist “My tentacles reach far and wide”.

The former Liberal Party leader hit back, claiming Mr Fordham’s version of events were “fantasy”.

But Mr Fordham refused to back down, telling Sky News Australia he’s prepared to call out Turnbull for his “BS”.

“But what’s interesting is if you go to an article that John Lyons from the ABC put together for the Good Weekend magazine back in 1991, Malcolm was using the same language back in 1991,” he said.

“When he realised that John Lyons had an unflattering story about Malcolm Turnbull, he used the tentacles line then – what he said to John Lyons was: “My tentacles spread to New York” because he knew that John Lyons was about to be posted to New York.

“So, the tentacles line he has been using clearly since the 1990s so his assertion that it was fantasy that he would say such a thing in 2008, I think, is pretty hollow and it turns out he’s been bragging about the size of his tentacles for many, many years.

“I think former prime ministers have a role to play, there’s not doubt about that, but if someone is going to spread BS, I’m going to call out that BS and if you want proof of Malcolm’s extent to which he’s willing to go to to change the media narrative, just read his own book.”
