The hunt for liveable planets around Alpha Centauri, the star next door

Although Alpha Centauri is practically next door in interstellar terms – just 4.37 light-years away – astronomers can not simply point a traditional telescope at it to look for planets because the brightness of the binary system means they would be almost impossible to see.
