Independent Senator Jacqui Lambie has slammed the Coalition’s rollout of the National Broadband Network, labelling it a “shameful” scheme that is not fit-for-purpose in a first-world country.

Speaking exclusively to Sky News Australia, Ms Lambie said the issues with the network needed to be ironed out and called on the federal government to boost access, particularly to the most vulnerable.

“It was supposed to be fibre to the house, we got about 50 per cent of that done then we said, ‘No, this is costing too much, now we’re going to be doing fibre to the node,’” she said.

“That’s been quite difficult for many people … what they should’ve done is they should’ve just got it done gold-plated and done with instead of, when the Coalition came in, said, ‘This will be costing way too much – it was a Labor thing that got put in place and therefore we’re going to attack it’.

“It actually hasn’t served many of us justice … for a first world country, it’s really disappointing that we can’t get decent NBN and those families out there, the most vulnerable that can’t afford it, especially going through COVID.

“Something definitely needs to be done, there are issues with not having a first-world NBN.”
