PM and Opposition leader continue pre-election pitches

The prime minister and Opposition leader have taken their pre-election pitch to battleground Sydney seats as the quasi-campaign continues.

Opposition leader Anthony Albanese was rolling out his plan to improve internet speeds while Prime Minister Scott Morrison was focused on jobs.

Mr Morrison has said there are "thousands of jobs", telling those who have lost their jobs during the pandemic that they can get back to work.

Job vacancies in the lead-up to Christmas will top 280,000 but this is still fewer than the 330,000 lost during August and October amid lockdowns.

Mr Albanese, meanwhile, attended a Western Sydney school - with Labor quick to point out internet speeds are holding many students back.

If elected, the Opposition is promising to spend $2.4 billion, giving fibre access to a further 660,000 households and businesses - in line with what the NBN once promised.
