Mental health and suicide prevention inquiry report finds system is overwhelmed

Chair of the Select Committee on Mental Health Dr Fiona Martin says mental health must always be given the same important as physical health, amid an inquiry report on the issue being tabled in parliament. The report lists 44 recommendations to improve the system which has been under pressure, heightened by recent natural disasters and the COVID pandemic. "The most important thing is that we treat mental health and we give mental health the same standing as physical health, so that ... if a child has broken their leg they get attention but if a child has depression or anxiety, they get attention immediately as well,” Dr Martin told Sky News Australia. She said out of the recommendations made, the “most important one” is for there to be a permanent standing committee in parliament on mental health and suicide prevention so the issue is “always on the agenda”. “We must ensure that we're always talking about mental health," she said.
