Religious discrimination bill ‘about freedom of expression’

Liberal Senator Amanda Stoker says the religious discrimination bill aims to protect the ability for people to act and speak according to their beliefs. "Ultimately, it is a bill that's about freedom of expression," Ms Stoker told Sky News Australia. "One of those fundamental liberties that we believe in is that people should be able to think for themselves, that they should be able to speak consistently with that belief and that they should be able to – within the law – act consistently with their beliefs," she said. Ms Stoker said there have been instances where clergy members were" dragged before tribunals" for "politely and respectfully stating the Catholic view on marriage" and where people have been fired from their jobs due to having different beliefs. "Those are simple examples of patterns that are in existence as our culture has become one that tends to want to shun or squeeze out people that have views that aren't popular," she said.
