Rishworth: Skilled migrants should return as soon as it’s safe

Labor MP Amanda Rishworth has backed the delay in the reopening of international borders but says international students and skilled migrants should return as soon as it’s safe to do so. The return of eligible visa holders has been delayed by two weeks as medical experts sift through the data on the newly-emerged Omicron variant. “Those international students and migrants that come to Australia play a really, really important role in the South Australian economy and so of course as soon as it’s safe to do so, I would certainly welcome the return of those people,” Ms Rishworth told Sky News Australia. “I know the universities are desperately needing it, of course businesses are requiring support, so, we do need to do it but we do need to do it in a safe way. “I’m never going to come in here and override medical advice, it is really important that we follow that medical advice, take those precautions but I certainly, as soon as it’s safe to do so, welcome their return.”
