Health Minister Greg Hunt announces plans to retire

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt has confirmed he will be retiring from politics at next year’s election to spend more time with his family, telling Parliament his heart is “ultimately elsewhere”. “Earlier today, I spoke with the Prime Minister and my electorate chairman and I informed them that I would not be contesting the next election,” Mr Hunt told Parliament on Thursday. Mr Hunt paid tribute to his “amazing wife” Paula, who was in the gallery during his speech. “She’s raised two beautiful children, largely as a single mother,” he said. “And I am so immensely proud of Poppy … and James. “They said to me, on Sunday, they looked at me and they said, ‘dad, this is your last chance to be a proper dad’. And ‘it’s time to come home, dad’.”
