Greens will be in ‘powerful position’ in next parliament: Bandt

Greens leader Adam Bandt says the party will be in a “powerful position” at the next parliament and will use it as leverage to push stronger climate change legislation. “No one is likely to have a majority, at least in the Senate, now, according to Labor, and that’s going to mean the Greens will be central to getting anything done in the next parliament,” he told Sky News Australia. “In that balance of power position, the Greens will kick the Liberals out and push the next government to go further and faster on the climate crisis.” Mr Bandt said this would include introducing legislation to phase out coal and gas and he can see the next government “turning the corner on climate” if they work together but says Labor needs to do more. “The more we learn about Labor’s climate policy, the worse it becomes, Labor is now actively boasting that the same amount of coal and gas will stay in the system as under the Liberals,” he said. “That’s not something to be proud of, that’s a recipe for climate collapse and the Greens are going to have to push and fix that.”
