Calls for better conditions for Age Pension recipients to return to workforce

State and territory chambers are jointly calling on the federal treasurer to make it easier for Age Pension recipients to return to the workforce. 
  
This would help address the country's labour shortage and would also mean businesses would benefit from the skills and experience of older Australians, who have little incentive to work given current restrictions on pension payments and reductions. 
  
Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry CEO Andrew McKellar says there are many Australians on the pension who have retired in recent years “who can still make a great contribution”.  
  
“But at the moment, the way that the arrangements work is that if they earn more than $480 over a fortnight, then they start to lose their pension and they lose it at 50 cents in a dollar, so it's a big disincentive," he told Sky News Australia.  
  
“What we're urging the government to think about here is to increase the threshold to allow them to earn more, to work maybe two or three days a week, so it's quite flexible - this would make a huge difference in an environment where business is struggling with one of the most pressing shortages of labour that we've had in the past two decades.”
