We should be ‘optimistic’ international borders will reopen soon

Finance Minister Simon Birmingham says there is optimism skilled migrants and international students will soon be able to return to Australia.

This comes as Australia's international border reopening will be discussed on Friday with the two-week travel ban to end on December 15.

“I think we should be very optimistic that we will see this sort of opening happen relatively soon," Mr Birmingham told Sky News Australia.

“Our final decisions and announcement will be made of course by the Prime Minister in due course."

He said the government has continued to gather as much information as possible about the Omicron variant to ensure a safe reopening.

“We've been making sure that we get the best possible analysis and evidence and then from there, I think we can confidence that certainly, international students who are looking to start next year should expect to be back in Australia, and that we’re well placed with our very, very, high vaccination rate," he said.
