Morrison government to increase permanent migration

The Morrison government will increase permanent migration to around 160,000 per year to strengthen economic growth and address skills shortages.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has told The Australian Newspaper the population intake is an essential part of the COVID recovery – but maintains it will be carefully managed.

Population growth fell to its lowest rate in a century – between 2020 and 2021 – to just 0.1 per cent.

The Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook will label the drop as the most enduring economic impact of the pandemic.
