Independents seen as a ‘protest movement’

Liberal MP Dave Sharma says independent candidates in elections are seen as a “protest movement”.

“People are free to give their voice to a protest movement,” Mr Sharma told Sky News Australia.

“But ultimately if you want to play a constructive role in changing the policies and changing the direction of Australia, it means you need to be working with at least half of your colleagues in the House of Representatives.

“And the main vehicle for doing that is a political party.”
