Moderna partnership gives Australia ‘manufacturing capability’ to make mRNA vaccines

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the government has secured a deal with Moderna to produce mRNA vaccines in Australia.

Mr Morrison said mRNA vaccines were the “biggest scientific discovery” in the pandemic and are a “massive part” of vaccines in the future - and that Australia should be creating them.

“We set about the task of ensuring that we have the manufacturing capability to do that, first of all to keep Australians safe and to protect their health – not just against COVID but against the many other communicable diseases,” Mr Morrison said at a media conference on Tuesday.

“With Moderna, we have a partner that ensures their IP, their knowledge, their advances in medical science can be brought here and be a part of an ecosystem here that will be see Australia be a leader in this area.”
