Frydenberg denies allocating funds for upcoming election

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says currently the government is not allocating election spending but confirmed there is a “contingency reserve” which may be used for many different initiatives. “They are measures that we expect to eventuate but at this point we can’t allocate and confirm to specific programs,” he said. Mr Frydenberg said the Delta variant, which emerged after the budget was released in May, required an additional $25 billion in spending - which the government needed to allocate for in the budget. He said not all initiatives requiring the reserve could be revealed but it may be used to buy medical supplies like vaccines or used for matters of national security. “It is a provision in the budget that is just there in the event that those specific areas need to be confirmed and which they would be in a budget that is scheduled for the end of March,” he said.
