Omicron ‘presents another challenge’, says PM

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the Omicron variant is presenting “another new challenge” as COVID-19 cases skyrocket around the country in the lead-up to Christmas. Mr Morrison acknowledged Omicron meant a higher volume of cases, however said cases themselves “don’t necessarily present the challenge”. “As we’ve always said, what really matters is how many people are experiencing serious illness,” he said. Despite the increase in COVID-19 cases, there has not been a significant impact on hospital systems across the country, according to the Prime Minister. Mr Morrison ruled out mandating mask wearing and other similar measures, saying that Australians have “common sense and they know what they need to do to protect their own health”. “Because of the volume of Omicron, it isn’t just about what governments are doing,” he said. “Governments are taking action … but also individuals and communities need to take action as well.”
