Former New South Wales minister Andrew Constance has received a boost in his bid for federal pre-selection.

A popular local contender for the Liberal Party in the South Coast electorate of Gilmore has stood aside.

Shoalhaven Heads lawyer Paul Ell pulled out of the race after being elected to the local City Council – paving the way for Mr Constance to run at next year's federal election.
