IN FULL: Anthony Albanese unveils Labor’s pitch for high-speed rail

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese has spoken in Newcastle – unveiling Labor's proposal for high-speed rail between Sydney and Newcastle.

Mr Albanese head to Newcastle to court voters in the Hunter after Labor suffered significant swings against it in the region at the last election.

The proposed rail line would cut commute time by two hours and would be the first stage of an extended line.

Labor says $500 million would be committed in its first budget to acquire the corridor.

The long-term vision for the project is to build a high-speed rail that runs up and down the east coast of Australia from Brisbane to Melbourne.
