Labor Party pitch fast train plans ahead of election

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese will today pitch plans to prioritise a high-speed rail between Newcastle and Sydney's CBD – if he wins the next election.

The proposed rail line would cut commute time by 2 hours and would be the first stage of an extended line. 

Labor says $500 million would be committed in its first budget to acquire the corridor. 

The long-term vision for the project is to build a high-speed rail that runs up and down the east coast of Australia from Brisbane to Melbourne.
