Anthony Albanese pledges emergency fleet of Australian ships

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese has unveiled Labor's policy to build a strategic fleet of Australian ships to protect the country's supply chains.

The proposal would see the country establish 12 ships which will ensure the nation has access to fuel supplies and other imports in the event of a natural disaster or international conflict.

Mr Albanese said – if Labor is elected – it will establish a taskforce to create a privately owned, commercially operated fleet to be used by the ADF in times of crisis.

"We'll establish a process ... to make sure that Australia has a domestic shipping fleet engaged in areas like fuel security to make sure we're not vulnerable to international shocks. 

"This is good for the Australian economy, it's good for jobs and it makes economic sense as well as is a necessary component of a serious approach to national security."
