A court challenge has been launched by the legal team for tennis star Novak Djokovic after the federal government cancelled the world number one's visa this morning.

Djokovic is facing being deported as he failed to meet Australia's visa requirements ahead of the Australian Open.

All players in the Australian Open are required to be fully vaccinated but Djokovic is believed to have been relying on the fact he had COVID within the past six months and was granted approval to compete by Tennis Australia yesterday.

His team failed to secure the correct exemption for his visa and the Australian Border Force said the star had “failed to provide appropriate evidence” to gain entry to Australia.

Djokovic’s legal team has appealed the decision to deport the player and have been given the opportunity to apply for alternate visa – but the move is unlikely to keep the star in Australia.
