Labor pledges new disaster prevention fund

Labor is promising to boost spending on the prevention of national disasters through a revamp of the multibillion-dollar Emergency Response Fund.

The fund, established in 2019, allows the government to draw $50 million a year to prepare for natural disasters and a further $150 million for emergency response operations.

If elected, Labor is vowing to replace the scheme with the Disaster Ready Fund.

The new fund would dedicate the available $200 million dollars towards disaster prevention by investing in new flood levees, cyclone shelters, fire breaks and evacuation centres.
