Food producers welcome relaxed isolation rules

Many food producers have welcomed the government’s relaxation of isolation rules for those working in food distribution – aimed at easing pressure on supply chains across the country. Large numbers of truck drivers, warehouse workers and farm labourers have been forced into isolation due to COVID-19 – which has wreaked havoc on the food supply chain. Dairy farmer Graham Forbes said the prior rules were a “real nightmare,” which made it difficult to cope in an industry which is already suffering from staff shortages. “It was getting fairly nerve wracking trying to work through the previous systems,” Mr Forbes told Sky News Australia. He said while it hadn’t been overly disruptive on his farm, getting product from farm to shelf was proving more difficult. “There’s been a real blockage in getting foodstuffs through to the consumer and the supermarket."
